Sweden's income tax is composed of municipal income tax (kommunalskatt) averaging approximately 32% and, for higher earners, a state income tax of 20% on taxable income exceeding approximately 598,500 SEK per year. The municipal tax applies from the first krona of taxable income -- Sweden has no true tax-free threshold, but a basic deduction (grundavdrag) reduces the taxable base. The combined marginal rate for high earners reaches approximately 52%.

A job tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag) reduces tax by up to approximately 35,000 SEK per year for employment income. Church fees of approximately 1% apply to Church of Sweden members, plus a burial fee of approximately 0.25% for all taxpayers. All amounts are in Swedish kronor (SEK).

Notable features of Swedish payroll

Sweden's defining payroll characteristic is the near-complete absence of employee social contributions combined with very high employer contributions. Employees nominally pay a 7% pension contribution, but this is fully offset by a tax credit, making the effective employee contribution zero. The entire social insurance burden falls on employers through arbetsgivaravgifter at 31.42% of gross salary, applied without a cap, though pension credits are capped at approximately 614,000 SEK per year.

Employers typically supplement statutory pension through collectively agreed occupational pension plans (tjänstepension) at 4.5-30% depending on income level and collective agreement. The ITP plan (for white-collar workers) and SAF-LO plan (for blue-collar workers) are the most common. When including both statutory contributions and occupational pension, the true total employer cost reaches 40-50% above gross salary. This makes Sweden one of the most expensive countries in the EU for employer-side labor costs.

Sweden's generous vacation entitlement of 25 working days is backed by a strong cultural expectation that employees take extended breaks, particularly during July (industrisemester). The municipal tax rate variation creates meaningful differences in net pay between municipalities -- living in a low-tax municipality like Vellinge (29.19%) versus a high-tax one like Dorotea (35.15%) can significantly impact take-home pay. For international companies, Sweden offers an expert tax relief (expertskatt) for qualifying foreign employees, reducing the taxable income to 75% of total compensation for the first seven years.
